According to an analysis of earnings data by www.MortgageDaily.com, the nation's top mortgage originators generated 3 percent more loans in the first four months of 2008 compared to the previous quarter. However, compared to the first quarter of last year, residential mortgage originations among 14 of the biggest U.S. primary lenders were off about 22 percent to volume of $370.6 billion. Countrywide Financial Corp. continues to reign as the top lender, with originations of $73 billion, and is expected to retain this position even after its planned third-quarter acquisition by Bank of America Corp. It was followed in the rankings by Wells Fargo, JPMorgan, Bank of America and Citigroup.
