New Laws to Protect Renters From Foreclosure

Chicago Sun-Times (08/15/08); Spielman, Fran
The Lawyers Committee for Better Housing predicts that 2,500 families and 10,000 tenants in Chicago rental housing could be evicted this year as their landlords face foreclosure. In response, Mayor Richard Daley proposed expansions to pro-bono legal services for evicted tenants and an emergency rental assistance program that covers moving expenses and rent for three months when a landlord's foreclosure forces an eviction. When Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich signs a bill into law that requires a 90-day notice prior to a foreclosure-related eviction and the sealing of court records to protect landlords, Daley will push for a new tenant outreach program as well.
