Mortgage Fraud Cases Strain FBI

Washington Post (04/17/08) P. D2
The subprime mortgage crisis dramatically boosted the number of mortgage fraud cases being invested by the FBI, according to Robert Mueller, the agency's director. In testimony before a Senate Appropriations subcommittee, he said the FBI's staff and other resources are overwhelmed by 19 investigations of mortgage lenders, investment banks and other financial institutions; there were only 14 such investigations into securities fraud and insider trading, among other unscrupulous practices, underway at the start of the year. Mueller added that another 1,300 cases involve brokers, loan investors and other individuals.
