In an effort to curtail mortgage losses, Charlotte, N.C.-based Wachovia Corp. will no longer originate first mortgages at branches in 19 states, including Illinois. However, retail branches will write home-equity loans and offer other banking services. Borrowers will need to rely on the company's direct lending channels--phone, Internet and direct mail--to obtain primary mortgages.
