Wachovia Corp.'s latest plan to reduce costs and mortgage-related losses involves eliminating 125 jobs by shuttering mortgage offices in 16 states where is has no retail bank presence. Additionally, mortgage consultants at branches in Illinois, Kansas and Mississippi will be terminated. Home equity loans and lines of credit, as well as 30-year fixed mortgages, still will be available through its branches; but Wachovia will require borrowers to obtain adjustable-rate and other such mortgages through direct mail offers or online.
